Summertime - Hopper Edward

The artwork entitled Summertime is an oil painting on canvas by the American artist Edward Hopper dated 1943 and kept in Wilmington at the Delaware Art Museum. In the canvas we see the façade of a colonial-style period house typical of the historic neighborhoods of New York, whose smooth surface is marked by the movement of the rustication and the entrance where the colonnade and the stairway to the house are present. The monotony is broken by the strong contrast between light and worn shadows that increase its three-dimensionality. On the steps there is a woman dressed in a light dress, just as the colors of the house are clear. The dress shows in transparency the sensual forms of the woman, her complexion and the reddish color of the hair is put in color relationship with the entrance door of the house as if it were a hidden invitation to enter. This ambiguity is also represented by the movement of the tent that reveals the interior of the house.
