Rooms by the Sea - Hopper Edward

Rooms by the Sea, is a painting by the American artist Edward Hopper painted in 1951 with the oil on canvas technique and kept in New Haven at the Yale University Art Gallery. The painting shows a room on whose empty wall the light entering the door on the right is projected. Through the door you can see a sea landscape whose sharp line of the horizon cuts this portion of space into two parts. Although Hopper's intention was as he himself repeatedly admitted, that of painting the sun on a wall, Rooms by the Sea has something disturbing, the door on the right seems to give directly on the water of the sea, which this is possible in reality but very unusual as an architectural choice. A similar compositional stylistic approach has been repeatedly used by the Surrealist artist Renè Magritte, with the painting in the painting.
