Four lane road - Hopper Edward

Four lane Road is a painting by Edward Hopper oil on canvas dated 1956 and belongs to a private collection. In the painting we find depicted the modernity represented by the retro style petrol pumps and a seated man looking at a point outside the picture in the direction of the light source. The man is seated, motionless, and from the fixed gaze he perceives that he is thinking and does not hear the words of call of the woman not far from the window. The light of Hopper's Four Lane Road is strong and being horizontal suggests sunlight before sunset. It lengthens the shadows in a disturbing way just like the shadows of Giorgio de Chirico's paintings. In Hopper's painting, just like in De Chirico's paintings, a long shadow is projected onto the street and onto the house. We do not know its origin, and this makes the vision disturbing. In the background a blanket of trees closes the landscape and the four-lane road delimits the boundary between man and nature. The colors of the painting are on and Hopper plays a lot with the contrasts between complementary colors: the red of the petrol pumps and the green of the trees, the warm white of the house lit by the sun in contrast with the cold blue shadows.
